Friday, January 13th

 

5:00-8:00 pm  Registration at the High Country Restaurant

 

5:00-9:00 pm  Beer Tasting at High Country Restaurant.

 

7-10 pm, Live Music at the High Country Restaurant

 

Saturday, January 15th:

 

8:00-9:30 am, Race Day Registration at the High Country Restaurant.

 

9:00-12 noon, Guided Ski Tour of Sargents Wildlife Area, led by Cathy Baer from the Chama Valley Outdoor Club.  Limit: 15 Skiers,  Skill Level:  Beginner to Intermediate,  Participants  must have their own skiing equipment. Meet at the High Country Restaurant a little before 9:00 am.  Free of Charge.

 

9:15-10:15 am Race Site Registration

 

10:45 am – Racers in the Freestyle Races must be in staging area at the race site.

 

11:00 am, 7.5K & 15K Freestyle Skiing Races

            11:00 am:  Begin 15K Freestyle Race

            11:20 am:  Begin 7.5 K Freestyle Race

Skiers must be in the staging area by 10:45 am.

12:30 pm-2:00 pm, Broom Hockey
Free of Charge, Event for Kids ages 8 and up, Bring a wooden handled broom if you can.  Some brooms will be available on site.

Avalanche Rescue Clinic

1:00 pm – 4:30 pm:  Cost $20.00, Limit 20 skiers,  Meet at High Country Restaurant.

Summary:  This field clinic is an introduction to Avalanche Rescue. Transceiver, probe, and shovel skills and techniques, group management, and victim care will be covered.   

Equipment:  Please bring snowshoes or skis for traveling on the snow. Dress appropriately for being outside for 3 hours, including a snack and some water.  If you need to borrow a transceiver/probe/shovel, please let us know ahead of time and arrive at (the restaurant) 20 minutes before the clinic begins.

Instructor:  Sandy Kobrock, certified avalanche instructor with Wolf Creek Avalanche School.

 

1:30 – 3:00 pm, Classic XC Skiing Techniques Clinic, Beginners to Advanced
Cost $15, Limit 20 Skiers, Meet at the race site, just below Windy Point, we miles North of old town Chama on Hwy. 17 at mile marker 2.

Refine your classic technique for the race or tour. This on-snow clinic is open to skiers of all abilities and will be held on groomed classic tracks. Participants must have their own ski equipment. Clinic will teach you how to maximize your kick and glide for greater skiing efficiency and longer endurance. Join us to learn how to improve your ability to glide over the snow and have more fun on your skinny skis. 

Instructors:  Rex Shurtliff and Doug Call from the Pagosa Springs Nordic Club will work with beginners.  Beginner skiers must rent their own equipment before coming to the Clinic.    More advanced skiers will work with Ken and Jessica Kisiel.  Ken and Jessica are Professional Ski Instructor Association (PSIA) level 3 certified cross-country ski instructors with nine years experience teaching cross-country skiing technique in classic and skate styles for beginner to advanced skiers.   They are avid recreational and competitive skiers.

5:00 pm, Awards Ceremony for Freestyle Races at the High Country Restaurant in the bar.  Live Music before and after the Ceremony.  Music until 9:00 pm.

5:00-10:00 pm  All-you-can-eat Pasta Dinner for skiers at the High Country Restaurant.

 

7:00 pm  Ski Wax Clinic

Location:   Foster’s Restaurant

Summary:  Clay Mosley, winner of the 10K Chile Ski Classic in 2011, will teach you how to wax your racing skiis for optimum performance.   Equipment:  Bring waxable skies.

 

Sunday, January 15th:

 

7:00 am-12 noon Breakfast Buffet at the High Country Restaurant

 

7:30 am-9:30 am – Registration at the High Country Restaurant

 

8:30 am-10:30 pm – Race Site Registration, cut-off for registration 9:15 am for 10 K racers and 10:30 am for 5 K races

 

9:45 am – 10K Racers must be in Staging Area at Race Site.

 

10:00 am – 10K Classic Style Race Begins.

 

11:00 am – 5K Classic Style Racers and 5K Snowshoers must be in Staging Area at Race Site.

 

11:15 am – 5K Classic Style Race mass start begins followed shortly by the 5K Snowshoe racer mass start.

 

Costume Contest will be ongoing throughout the races.  Judges will be looking at costumes before and during races.   To enter the contest, racers must be in costume during the race!!

 

Race Results will be posted as soon as we calculate them at the High Country Restaurant.

 

1:00 pm- 3:00 pm, Chile/Chili Contest, Cost:  $5

Taste the best Chile or Chili(green, red, Texas style or other styles) that Chama has to offer!  Come and try out Northern New Mexico's finest and help decide the winner!  Tortillas and cornbread also provided.

Location:  Senior/Community Center at the corner of Hwy 64/84 & Hwy. 17.  Look for the signs.  Cash prizes will be awarded to the best chili or chile!!

 

2:00-4:00 pm  Live Music at the High Country Restaurant, free stew & hot drinks

 

4:00 pm Chile Ski Classic Awards Ceremony at the High Country Restaurant in the back room.   Live Music, door prizes & food.  Music before and after the Awards Ceremony.  

 

5:00-7:00 pm Live Music at the High Country Restaurant

 

Monday, January 16th:

 

ALL DAY:  The Chama Chile Ski Classic Race Course is available for non-competitive touring and enjoyment!

 

10:00am-2:00 pm, Telemark Ski Clinic

Limit: 10 skiers, Cost: $10, Limit 10 Skiers.

Meet at High Country Restaurant at 10:00 am.
Instructor:  Patrick Hogan from Cumbres Nordic Adventures
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate.  
Skiers must provide their own tele skiis, boots, skins, beacon and avalanche shovel.  Some beacons available to use, call for more information.
Bring water and a lunch.

Leader:  Doug McLennan       Limit:  15 skiers    Free of Charge

Difficulty:   Beginner to Intermediate

Equipment:  Skiers must provide their own ski equipment.  Bring water and a lunch.

Meet at High Country Restaurant.

Tour will be a round trip of 5 to 6 miles on a gentle grade.

11:00 am-4:00 pm  Guided Tour: Spuce Hole Yurt

Limit 15 Skiers, Free of Charge

Tour will be led by Mary Ann DeBoer with Cumbres Nordic Adventures. 

Meet at the High Country Restaurant. 

Equipment:  Skiers must provide their own ski equipment. 

Difficulty Level:  Beginner to Intermediate. 

Tour will be a round trip of 5 miles (2 ½ miles one way), on an easy trail with approximately 400 foot elevation gain.  At the Spruce Hole Yurt, hot drinks and snacks will be provided.
